Hammer Reshaping & Voicing

The condition of piano hammers plays a crucial role in piano performance. Over time, the felts develop grooves and lose their ability to properly mate the strings. As a result, the hammers wear down much faster and produce undesirable tonal inconsistencies.

Process of hammer filing for voicing and tonal regulation on a piano

Hammer filing is a procedure required to restore their healthy shape.  Once the hammer surface area can properly contact the strings, tonal regulation is possible.

Voicing is the process of adjusting hammer felts by needling or solution application. The harder the felt, the harsher the tone and vice-versa: The softer the felt, the duller the tone. The goal of voicing is to strike a balance between tonal brilliance and warmth.
